Information for International applicants

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of the following qualifications:

  1. a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree with at least Second Class Honours or
  2. a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with at least Second Class Honours in appropriate subjects as approved by the Board or
  3. a Bachelor's degree with a Third Class Honours in Engineering or in a relevant area of study and are in possession of other qualifications, including relevant experience following their first cycle degree or
  4. equivalent qualifications approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Board.
  5. Admission of applicants under paragraph (c) and (d) shall be made conditional on the results of an interview and in such cases the Board may require applicants to successfully complete a preparatory programme.

The MSc in Engineering will provide you with the opportunity to follow UM Level 4 or 5 study-units that will deepen your understanding in the chosen area of engineering. You will be exposed to research problems that will allow you to study and provide a solution to a challenging problem, which will in turn contribute to your intellectual development. Throughout the course, you will be able to integrate your acquired research skills and combine the knowledge gained from your study-units to carry out a dissertation that will contribute unique research to already-existing literature in the field.

Applicants interested in pursuing a Master of Science by Research are to consult with staff members before submitting their application and research proposal.

The course shall be offered in areas of study in Engineering where the Faculty can offer expert guidance and supervision.

In addition to the compulsory study-units (70 ECTS credits), students are required to register for 20 ECTS credits in elective study-units which are to be selected upon consultation with the project supervisory team.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Master of Science in Engineering - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Engineering.

By the end of the course, you will learn how to:

  • Define a clear hypothesis for a research problem.
  • Complete an effective review of current state of the art research/solutions in an area of study.
  • Use sound engineering principles to develop methodologies that address a research problem.
  • Differentiate between different methodologies and solutions that address an engineering problem.
  • Conduct research to carry out a research project effectively.
  • Evaluate results from different solutions and quantify and qualify your effectiveness.

As a graduate holding a Master of Science in Engineering, you will be able to find work as a research and development engineer, industrial researcher, product development engineer, consulting engineer, or as a design engineer, to name a few. If you would like to further your studies, or are interested in pursuing an academic career, then you may choose to enrol in a doctorate programme offered by the University of Malta, or by a foreign institution.
